FEMINIST breaks down the viral essay

Is having a boyfriend embarrassing now? The Internet is trying to decide after an article by Vogue writer Chante Joseph went viral, sparking conversations about standards in heterosexual relationships.

Historically, women in various societies were considered the property of men, first belonging
to their fathers and then their husbands. Women and girls were forced to enter marriages with men, and women who did not
get married were ostracized and even killed. As such, being single was a dangerous position to be in, and heterosexual relationships were a necessary form of survival under patriarchy.

Vogue’s viral article represents the modern shift towards a world where many (but not all) women and girls have the freedom to choose to be single without relying on a man. Being single is a choice that many women deliberately make and celebrate.

Increasingly, women are looking to define themselves beyond their relationship status, rather than being defined by the men in their lives. This moment calls on us to rethink what heterosexual relationships look like and what behavior women are willing to accept from men.

“Being partnered doesn’t affirm your womanhood anymore; it is no longer considered an achievement.”

Chante Joseph (Vogue)
